We may have a long way until things are going back to normal, so we better arm ourselves with a lot of patience and try to adapt to a new normality.

Set goals and structure your day

It’s a lot harder to keep up your normal routine when working remotely and that’s why you need to schedule everything.  

Firstly, create a morning routine that gets you ready for work, schedule breaks and make sure you use them to relax.

Secondly, set up targets, a goal that you want to reach by the end of the day or week. A good thing is making yourself accountable by telling someone else, either another team member or your manager, what you intend to get done by the end of the day and then sending it to them.

Lastly, once you’ve set your schedule, make it visible to your co-workers with a shared calendar in order to prevent interruptions.

Set the scene

Try to find yourself a dedicated and comfortable spot to work that you can associate with your job and leave when you’re off the clock. The worst thing you can do is to work from bed.

Also, make sure you have an internet service that meets your need. For a strong connection, use an internet cable instead of using the wi-fi. If you have kids, their FaceTiming and video game habits may slow your connection and download speeds.

Stay connected

Working remotely can feel isolating at times, so as part of your routine, try to interact with your co-workers regularly not only via emails but face to face.

Visually seeing your colleagues can help collaboration, so consider video conferencing more often in these moments.

You can use tools like Microsoft Teams or Zoom for chats and videocalls.

Dress to impress

You wouldn’t go to the office in your pyjamas so don’t work from home in them either.

Of course, your dress code can be more relaxed, but you still need to feel like you are dressed for work.

Use a VPN connection

Use a VPN whenever you’re connected to a network that you don’t control. That includes Wi-Fi at co-working spaces, cafes, libraries, and airports.
